HistoryThe beginnings of "The Polish" trace back to December 20, 1917, when a handful of visionaries formed a social club called the Thaddeus Kosciuszko Citizens Club to serve the Yonkers business community. From 1917 to 1932, the club moved several times and reorganized (incorporating on January 16, 1924 as the Thaddeus Kosciuszko Citizens Club Holding Corp.), always with one "Polish dream" in mind: establishing a grand community center. The founders began their journey by establishing a facility at 46 Orchard Street in Yonkers, later buying lots at 332-334 Nepperhan Avenue with the goal of eventually erecting their own building. The "dream" became reality on October 24, 1932, when, instead, they were able to purchase Columbus Hall, a former armory housing the 4th Separate Company of the New York Armory National Guard, and, by then, Westchester's best-known sporting arena. The building, erected in 1886, cost $20,000 and the land on which it stood cost $4,500. Following extensive renovations and modernization, the Polish Community Center opened its doors on January 2, 1933. Over the years, renovations at the Polish Center have been ongoing to include a grand ballroom, three additional dining rooms of various sizes for private affairs, a public restaurant & bar, and the installation of air conditioning. Most recently, the final touch was completed, a meticulous exterior renovation restoring the building to its original appearance in the 1930s. Operating today as "Polonaise Catering at The Polish Center," this historic and beautiful structure ranks among the finest facilities of its kind in greater New York, hosting business and political functions, meetings, weddings and parties of all sizes. |
